A Fresh Look at Saint Paul

Fr Francisco Nahoe OFMConv of the Franciscan Spirit and Life Institute offers five presentations from October through March exploring (1) Saint Paul’s zealotry and persecution of the Church, (2) questions about the nature his conversion, (3) the identity of his opponents, (4) the Jewish roots of his missionary activity and (5) his attitude toward the Law of Moses.

Reading Saint Paul with Saints and Poets

These four talks, given by Professor Stephen C. Córdova, explore how Augustine of Hippo, Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, Thomas Aquinas, and Dante Alighieri read and interpreted Saint Paul’s understanding of Christ. For these thinkers, Christ is the motive force of conversion; the Being who changes hearts, the source of grace who works with and beyond our natural capacities to bring us to where we truly belong. Each presentation will feature an extended meditation on one of the doxologies—hymns of praise—from the letters of Paul in light of the works of these great thinkers.

Romans 1:19-23, A Stumbling Block from Saint Paul

This lecture is presented by Professor Cortright. Although the Church dogmatically teaches that mankind can come to know of God’s existence through reason’s natural power to reflect on the evidence surrounding us in Creation, some recent scholarship questions whether the traditional interpretation of this famous passage from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Romans in support of this dogma is accurate. In this lecture, Professor Cortright will bring to bear his considerable expertise on the intellectual conditions of the Hellenistic world of Saint Paul in order to examine the case for the traditional interpretation and the merits of the opposing view.

Images of Saint Paul in Art

Join Erik Keilholtz in looking at various depictions of Saint Paul throughout the history of art, and focusing on the various types of iconography used in the various ages. We will also look at the architecture of some of the churches dedicated to Saint Paul throughout the world.
